It was found, that Azelaic acid posses strong 5 alpha-reductase inhibition activity in skin.
Currently mechanism of its reductase inhibition activity is unknown.
Its topical action was tested on the model of acne. No studies on androgenetic alopecia are known.
At combine administration of azelaic acid, zinc sulphate and Vit. B6 90% inhibition of 5 alpha-reductase activity was obtained.
Azelaic acid is included in Azelex (Skinoren) - topical cream for treatment of pathological skin conditions.
