[Bicalutamide (ICI 176,334)]
Antiandrogen with steroid structure. Derivitive of Flutamide.
Mechanism:
Inhibit 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone (5-alpha-DHT) and testosterone receptors activity by blocking androgen receptors.
Very powerful receptor inhibitor.
It can be used topically.
Physicochemical properties of Casodex suggest that a blood-brain barrier exists for the drug which results in exclusion of this antiandrogen from central sites of androgen negative feedback, therefore these side effects that are observed in case of Flutamide (diarrhea, impotence, liver problems, and high blood pressure) are much less prominent. At this time no clinical study of casodex action against androgenetic alopecia is known.
