Researched have identified dermal papillae of adult hair follicles as abundant source of highly potent precursor cells (so-called, skin-derived precursor cells, or SKPs) that are capable of generating neurons among other cell types. these skin-derived precursor cells can be potentially used in treatment of various degenerative conditions of nervous system.
Using rodents as the model, researches demonstrated that the dermal papilla of their hair follicles is 1,000-fold enriched for these neuron forming cells compared with whole skin.
