Kenneth W. Anderson, MD
Dr. Kenneth Anderson is a facial plastic surgeon with an energy and passion for patient care, and for meticulous, exacting surgery. He is one of just a handful of surgeons in the world practicing hair replacement surgery full-time who are certified both by the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, as well as the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. A prominent area of his expertise is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), which is a type of hair transplant that involves moving one graft at a time, completing a hair transplant without creating a linear scar on the scalp. Dr. Anderson holds the published record for the most FUE grafts transplanted in a single, one-day session at over 1900 grafts. He has delivered many talks, lectures, and courses to the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery regarding this new and exciting method of hair transplantation surgery, and performs FUE procedures several times per week.

Prior to medical school, Dr Anderson obtained formal training in the fine arts. Using these skills not only for surgery on his patients, he has also published several medical illustrations in medical textbooks and journals. Dr. Anderson has combined his artistic talents with seven years of world-class surgical subspecialty training at the University of Michigan to bring his patients a blend of talents rarely seen in the field of cosmetic surgery.

Dr. Anderson graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. After medical school, he was accepted into the University of Michigan surgical subspecialty training program in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, regarded by the medical field as one of the top programs worldwide. While at the University of Michigan, Dr. Anderson was 1st or 2nd surgeon on over 2,500 surgical procedures involving the face, head and neck, including highly specialized procedures such as cancerous tumor resection and pediatric airway reconstruction. During his six years on staff at the University of Michigan Hospitals, guided by his background and training in the fine arts, he took a keen interest in the subspecialty of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. He worked with giants in the field of facial plastic surgery including Dr. Carol Bradford, MD, FACS, and Dr. Lawrence Marentette, MD, FACS, who each conferred their surgical expertise and patient care philosophy to Dr. Anderson.

He completed the otolaryngology-head and neck surgery training program in 2002. Although he was board certified by the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and could have gone out into practice, he elected to pursue additional surgical training in his area of highest interest. He was awarded a Fellowship accredited by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS); one of just 30 surgeons nationwide to receive this honor. For the full course of the Fellowship he worked with an acknowledged master in the field, Dr. Shan Baker, MD, FACS. During his 12 month Fellowship with Dr. Baker he performed many different cosmetic and reconstructive facial plastic surgery procedures, including face lifts, brow lifts, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), and facial laser resurfacing. He also performed reconstructive procedures using skin and muscle flaps to repair tissue defects of the face following skin cancer removal. Dr. Anderson was also proud to care for the heroes of this country by serving as a staff physician at the Veteran's Administration (VA) Hospital in Ann Arbor for the full duration of his Fellowship. At the VA Hospital he was the head surgeon of a 3 surgeon team that performed primarily nasal and facial reconstruction procedures on our nation's veterans.

During his residency at the University of Michigan, he was very active in scientific research. He spent over three years working with David Mooney, Ph.D., a world renowned authority in the field of tissue engineering. Dr. Anderson's research work focused on the difficulties of facial reconstruction following injuries in which loss of facial bones prevents a normal facial appearance-even after extensive surgery. Along with Dr. Mooney and a team of scientists, Dr. Anderson developed a tissue engineered cartilage implant that could be placed anywhere on the facial skeleton without incisions -- in essence "injectable cartilage." His NIH-supported work was recognized and portions were published by the editors of several peer-reviewed medical journals, including the prestigious journal Nature. For his discoveries he was awarded the premier otolaryngology award at the University of Michigan, the Merle Lawrence Research Award, for his manuscript "Tissue Engineering of Injectable Cartilage."
